THANKSGIVING IN PRAYER

thankyou-resized

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV

God has an interesting way of convicting us, and His timing is always perfect and impeccable. One day during my daily prayer time, I was convicted about the lack of thanksgiving in my prayer life. This was such a powerful moment the only thing I could think of doing was to write in my prayer notebook that I would give God thanks for specific things each day of the week as follows: Sunday- my salvation; Monday- the work of the Holy Spirit; Tuesday- the intercession of Jesus Christ for me in prayer; Wednesday- the Bible; Thursday- the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit; Friday- our riches in Christ; and Saturday- the forgiveness of my sins. In summary I realized that I needed to give thanks in everything. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

This Bible verse was precious to my wife and me, but it became even more real to us after the way God used it in the birth and life of our third son. Daniel was born with a cleft palate and a hare lip. Shortly before His birth we had memorized 1 Thessalonians 5:18 in a Bible study course; God brought it to our minds at this critical time. Several months after his birth our son underwent plastic surgery to improve his appearance. Daniel did not let the way he looked hinder his life. As an adult he graduated from seminary, became a youth pastor, and taught in a Christian classical academy.

God has provided blessings untold.

Of His great goodness we can extol.

We thanked Him in good times and also in pain,

And praised Him as He taught us again and again.

The oil of thanksgiving lubricates relationships.

  • Find Bible verses to support each item for which I gave thanks in the first paragraph. Consider the following verses: John 3:16, Romans 8: 26, Hebrews 5:15-16, Psalm 119:105, John 16:13, Ephesians 1, Ephesians 1:7.
  • Recall an incident in your life that was not pleasant at the time when you gave thanks to God.
  • If you were to thank God for something different each day of the week, what would these items be?
