A GODLY LEGACY
David prayed, “And give my son Solomon a loyal heart to keep Your commandments and Your testimonies and Your statutes, to do all these things, and to build the temple for which I have made provision.” 1 Chronicles 29:19, NKJV
God has blessed my wife and me with a beautiful family and I’m grateful for our children and our grandchildren. I think it was around the year 2000 after the last of my eleven grandchildren was born, I began writing a poem for each of them highlighting one aspect of their personality as a legacy. To introduce these poems I wrote a poem, capturing a theme of Awana Clubs International, Because Kids Matter to God.
To My Grandchildren
Oh God, kids matter so much to You,
Because of this, to Your plan I’ll be true.
I’ll introduce kids to You at an early age,
Tell them Your love is a gift, not a wage.
I’ll tell them how much they mean to You
By what I say and what I do.
I’ll show them the truth of Your precious Word;
Your way and Your plan, I’ll make sure they have heard.
When they stray from the path You’ve set,
I’ll guide them back in ways they will not forget.
I’ll help them become more like You,
Feeding their soul, keeping them true.
Until they enter their heavenly home,
Never from Your love may they roam.
O God, help me to this plan be true;
Because, God, kids matter to You.
David in his farewell address to Israel as recorded in 1 Chronicles 29:19 demonstrates that kids matter to God. He fervently prays that God would “give his son Solomon a loyal heart to keep Your commandments and Your testimonies and Your statutes, to do all these things, and to build the temple for which I have made provision.” This godly legacy is one reason why “He (God) gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart who will do all of My will.’” (Acts 13:22b, NKJV)
The best legacy for our children is a life lived for God.
What legacy will you pass on?
