Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV)

It was a routine and normal visit to my cardiologist; however, this time he gave me some mixed news. My cardiologist told me that my heart pumps at only 25% efficiency. Normally this would be very serious and possibly bad news, however I smiled because only a few years ago the number was 15 %.

For comparison, a normal heart pumps at 55% to 70% efficiency. My percentage was higher now because I took care of my heart with diet and exercise. As I studied further, I learned most hearts beat 101,000 times each day and 3 billion times in a lifetime. Through the wonders of medical science and the grace of God, a porcine aortic valve implanted in my body sustains my life until God calls me home.

Proverbs 4:23 commands me to keep my heart with all diligence. In the Bible, the Greek and Hebrew words describe the heart as more than a physical organ. In God’s Word the heart includes the intellect, emotions, and will-- the totality of man’s being. Just as my physical heart needs to be cared for with diet and exercise, my spiritual heart requires attention. The center of my being needs nurture to function to its maximum capacity. Through Bible study, prayer and living for Jesus; my spiritual heart keeps healthy.

My heart beats long, but still is weak.

Training and diet I carefully seek.

A heart kept with diligence God makes strong,

My growth in Him, this is my song.

A physical heart one day will fail, but my heart from God lasts forever.
