WHERE LOVE AND JUSTICE MEET
But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that when we were still sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:8, NKJV
I’m an old-fashion type of man, particularly when it comes to love and dating. During our courtship my future wife and I established certain boundaries for our behavior; that is, we sought justice and fairness in our relationship. We also needed to express our growing love within those limits. Our dates included Christian learning opportunities, swimming in Avondale quarry or the ocean, and listening to her presidential speech at the student nurses graduation.
King David also learned about justice and the love of God as recorded in 1 Chronicles 21. When the king disobediently numbered the people, God applied his justice and many were killed. Later when David confessed his sins, God in love removed the punishment in mercy and displayed His grace in allowing David to purchase the ground on which the temple would be built. Both grace and mercy are components of God’s love.
Jesus at the cross showed both the justice and the love of God. To balance the scales of justice, Jesus paid the penalty for our sin with His life (Romans 5: 8). In love He invites us to accept the gift of knowing Him personally. (John 17:3)
In all his dealings God is just and fair.
Yet His love is always there.
We and David knew it well.
At the cross Christ saved us from hell.
At the cross the justice and love of God meet.
What is meant by the statement that at the cross love and justice meet?
