For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he is guilty of all.James 2:10, NKJV

Have you ever lost out on an opportunity? How about being passed on for a promotion after you’ve been working very hard on a high profile project? Well I happened to me various times, but I still remember when I was not awarded a specific badge during my time as a Boy Scout.

At the close of Boy Scout camp, the director called me into his office. He said, “Although you worked hard on your Life Saving Badge during the four weeks of camp, we feel you do not qualify for that badge. If we award you this, others will think you can save a person who is drowning, but you have not developed enough skill.

For this badge we have a higher standard. Unlike bird study, if you cannot recognize a bird there are no severe consequences. We can offer you the option of going seven miles to a nearby city, where you can work with an instructor to improve your skill.”

The only way I could get there was to ride my bicycle which I did. After another month of swimming I became the proud owner of the Life Saving Merit Badge.

God too has a higher standard for our eternal salvation. None of us can work hard enough to obtain it. We must accept eternal life with Him as His free gift. The consequences of not receiving his offer is eternal separation from Him. But the joy of opening our hands to grasp His gift are eternal rewards beyond measure.

The Life Saving Badge I wanted to earn,

But a higher standard I had to learn.

God’s standard is “no violation.”

By God’s gift we have salvation.

We may have high standards, but God’s standard is perfection.

When have you been held to a higher standard?
