It starts with a small seed

Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it?  It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” Mark 4:30-32

I am sure most of us have heard the parable of the mustard seed at some point or another in our lives.  Jesus talks about how a tiny seed can produce a huge tree, in which the birds can find refuge and safety.  Jesus wants to show us we are not too small to do something good for someone or to share the Good News of Salvation with others.

Many times we think “I am only one person, what can I do?” But I have come to realize that if we start changing my attitude towards life, that will have an impact on someone else’s attitude.  Have you ever heard laughter is contagious? If you are happy – people will want to be around you.  That’s how we can make a difference.

I read this somewhere and I liked: “We often get caught up in thinking we have to do something really big to achieve our goals, but sometimes little things really can make a difference”  This statement makes me realize that we do not need to start big.  We start small – like that mustard seed – and then we grow. Nothing is too little when we help.  Nothing is too little when we do it with a cheerful heart.  Colossians 3:23a says: “Whatever you do, do it from the heart.”

Listen, when Jesus started his ministry, he was alone, and then he found 12 men to whom he taught the truths of the Kingdom.  Those twelve apostles had the big commision to going to spread the Good News of Jesuscrist, and those who heard the who news spread it even further.  Just think, you are saved because someone shared that good news with you or your ancestors.

Never too young, too old, too poor, too rich to help.  We can all plant our mustard seed!

Here are some examples of a great way to get us started on this mission:

  1. Smile to someone
  2. Pay for someone’s morning coffee
  3. Let the driver who is trying to get out of the gas station pass in front of you
  4. Bake/buy cookies for your neighbor
  5. Share a meal with someone
  6. Donate those clothes that don’t fit
  7. Offer to cook a meal for that mom who just had a baby
  8. Hold the elevator for someone
  9. Open the door for someone
  10. Share Jesus with someone

May our seed grow so big as a mustard tree, and may our fruit be good.

God bless you all

Jessi
