July 4th

Dear Precious Saints of MBC,
I trust you are doing well and looking forward to this coming Lord's day.
During this long July 4th of July weekend I want to say without apology: I love America. I am unashamedly patriotic. I get teary eyed at patriotic events. I stand proudly when the national anthem is sung and I root for the USA to win. I respect greatly the men and women who defend this nation. I will fly the flag proudly at our home this week and defend this nation to the end. That's not to suggest that I believe we are a perfect nation - far from it - and that we do not make our share of mistakes. I am not blind to our failures and shortcomings. However, the USA is one of the most benevolent, free and powerful nations in the world. And we use our greatness to improve our world, not tear it down and conquer. But we are a temporary power.
Anyone who has ever read a history book knows that every kingdom on earth has either failed, or is on its way to failure. Many kingdoms have fallen in our lifetime: communist regimes in Eastern Europe and dictatorships in the Muslim world more recently. Even the greatest of kingdoms: Babylon, Greece and Rome have fallen. Eventually our beloved America will pass away, whether it's when Jesus returns or before, but like all earthly kingdoms, America is temporary. Only God's Kingdom is eternal. That is why Jesus tells us to "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matt. 6:33). Only true believers in Jesus Christ are citizens of God's coming eternal Kingdom. During this weekend, let's remind ourselves that we are to live in light of our heavenly citizenship and seek His righteousness. That does not mean we are not law-abiding, loyal citizens of the USA, but God's kingdom is the only one that will never end. And it is to that eternal kingdom that we hold our greatest loyalty.
See you this Sunday on Line!
In the light of His glory and grace,
Pastor Doug
