MENTORING

And the things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2 NKJV)

I enjoy teaching, mentoring, and enabling a student to better understand a subject. After retiring as a rocket scientist, I looked for some task to keep my mind active. I found math tutoring at the local junior high school an excellent fit. What a pleasure to see the light go on as students are finally able to understand those mathematical concepts that they had struggled with all school year!

As much fun and enjoyment those moments brought me, there’s an even greater joy for me to teach the spiritual truths of the Bible, whether in a church Sunday school setting, a small group in a youth club, or in one-on-one discipleship at the downtown Rescue Mission. The rewards of mentoring are marvelous when I see those I have taught go on to teach others.

I speculate that Paul experienced great joy when he wrote 2 Timothy 2:2 as his ministry drew to a close. The apostle had spent much time with Timothy on his missionary journeys. Paul poured God’s teaching into his disciple’s receptive young mind. As he saw young Timothy teaching others, he was thrilled.

The truth I have, I cannot keep.

Unless I teach, I cannot sleep.

Then I see my pupil’s task;

Share with others is all I ask.

One of the greatest delights in life is to share God’s truth with another.
