REST STOP NEEDED

He [Jesus] said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31 NIV)

As I told you in my entry called “Angel Deliverer” about my automobile accident in Yellowstone Park, the cause was revealed that I had fallen asleep at the wheel. But why? It was a long journey, I had driven seven hours the day before, and I had a restless night worrying about the cares of the day. The next day I had driven more than five hours, and was driving drowsy. Then the accident happened. The car struck a tree and landed on its side. The automobile was a total loss and my family was in peril.

As a result of the accident I was forced to rest in a Wyoming hospital right alongside my injured wife. I questioned why is it that my friends can drive for many hours without adverse consequences but I could not. At a later time and after other diagnoses they showed I had sleep apnea and combined with the high altitude which also adversely affected my condition. I desperately needed a rest stop because I had not rested enough, yet I failed to recognize this need, plus I also didn’t know about my sleep apnea.

Jesus and His disciples also faced a situation similar to my story about requiring rest. They had been in exhausting activities for several days. Healing, ministry, and traveling had taken their toll.  Also John the Baptist had been recently murdered by Herod, creating additional stress. The Great Physician’s prescription in Mark 6:31 was, “Come, get some rest.”

Work to exhaustion seldom pays.

It will shorten my few days.

God has given me a test.

To come apart and then to rest.

Life, like music, flows better with necessary rests.
