And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15, KJV)

Life is full of ups and downs, good times and bad times, yet one thing is always constant, we’re always learning, no matter how old we are, life is always teaching us new things. Many life events occurred in my childhood and early youth which prepared me for a life of Christian service in college and beyond:

*I learned many hymns and have even played a few on the piano at the evening service in the small church I attended.

* At home I played church creating my own style of worship.

* Attending Youth for Christ rallies and even going to the Boston Garden to hear Billy Graham helped me understand the gospel message.

*In my church youth group I heard practical advice on topics such as avoiding minced oaths.

*A released time Bible study and prayer at a pastor’s home helped me develop good habits

*I memorized passages of scripture even for contests in which I did not participate.

* In one of my years of high school I participated in student-led Bible reading and prayer to begin each day.

Later in life my son Tom used 2 Timothy 3:15 as part of his commissioning service at church before he departed as a medical missionary to Nigeria for 19 years.

Timothy also had a spiritual training program conducted by his mother Eunice and grand-mother Lois (2 Timothy 1:5). A major part of this program was learning the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:15).

Knowing and living scripture truth,

Building on foundations laid in youth,

Prepares one to live the Christian life,

Avoids many problems, minimizes strife.

A biblical foundation in youth can prepare one for future Christian service.
