The Supporting Cast of Christmas Elizabeth: The Cousin of Mary Luke 1 & 2
Successful events of history are seldom a solo act: There are always key and supporting people behind the event. The birth of Jesus is no exception. Joseph and Mary clearly get top billing for the birth of Jesus, but behind the scene is a woman Mary felt comfortable going to when she discovered she was pregnant: Her cousin Elizabeth.
What made her special in her role of encouragement and support was that she also was pregnant. Additionally, her conception was also special in that she had been unable to have children. She had endured the prying questions, the insensitive remarks, the sharp pangs of desire for someone else’s baby and the nagging doubts about the goodness of God. Next Sunday we want to look at her role in the Christmas story.
