Making an Impact!

Dear Precious Saints of MBC,

I trust you are doing well and looking forward to the New Year.

This coming Monday the Clemson University Tigers will play the University of Alabama Crimson Tide for the national championship in college football. It promises to be a good game as these two teams are arguably the two best college teams in the nation. Each team comes into the game undefeated.   What's more, each team, along with their fans, brings to the game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California some unique traditions. Among the more unique is a tradition started by the fans of Clemson more than 50 years.

Let me explain: Fifty years ago George Bennett was the director of Clemson's booster club. Mr. Bennett wanted to make a statement that the fans of Clemson made a huge economic impact in the cities where they played. He also wanted the fans to leave a lasting impact on the cities where they were playing: The Clemson Tigers are in town! He encouraged fans that were going to road or bowl games to go to their local banks and get as many $2 bills as they could and stamp them with an orange Clemson Tiger paw. These bills were then to be used for tips, purchases and other items the weekend of the football game. The end result was the city where they were playing their games would be inundated with thousands of $2 bills with the Tiger Paw logo. Weeks, months and even years later, when a $2 bill surfaces in these cities, with the ink pad stamped Tiger logo, people who received them knew that Tiger fans were in their city. Bennett said, "It identifies us. It's a way of bonding together."

I wonder what kind of impression and lasting mark we make as Christians on the places we visit. Do we leave a gospel track at the hotel or restaurants we visit? Do we offer a word of encouragement or share the gospel? Can people see in us something that is distinctly unique and special?

Paul told the Corinthians in his second letter to them that "we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life (2 Corinthians 2:15-16). What kind of an impact are you making?
See you this Sunday,

In the light of His glory and grace,

Pastor Doug
