The Most Upsetting Verse in the Bible

May 29, 2016 Speaker: Series: God's Greatest Hits

Topic: Everlasting Punishment Passage: 2 Thessalonians 1:9

The Most Upsetting Verse in the Bible
2 Thessalonians 1:9
Most of us focus our attention on the verses that comfort and encourage - and with good reason! We meditate on the love of God and His grace toward sinners. But what about the passages that deal with the eternal punishment of the unsaved? Paul's second letter to the Christians at Thessalonica contains one of the most jaw dropping, gut wrenching truths in all scripture: "They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord." This verse reminds us all that hell is real and terrible. It is the fate of those who reject God. Evangelicals agree about this unhappy truth. Yet some questions about hell cause disagreements to arise. Some evangelicals believe the wicked will experience perpetual, conscious torment after death. Others argue that the wicked will experience a limited period of conscious punishment and then they will cease to exist. This Sunday we will look at this most challenging of issues.
